LEGISLATORS from Matabeleland have bemoaned lack of recreational centres in rural areas saying this is driving the youth into crime, and drug and substance abuse.

Gwanda North legislator Desire Nkala said limited access to recreational facilities in rural Matabeleland was a challenge.

“We have no facilities, hence our rural youth have limited opportunities, which has hindered the development of the province,” he said.

Tsholotsho North legislator Libion Sibanda said the government should increase funds allocated to the Youth ministry.

“We urge the government to prioritise increasing allocation of funds to the Ministry of Youth so that it implements projects to empower our young people,” he said.

Nkayi North legislator Sithembiso Nyoni said shortage of recreational centres affected the development of the nation at large.

“We need to work together to uplift the youth, hence we have to conduct nationwide research on the activities that our youth need for their growth in the current era so that development is achieved,” she said.

Nyoni, however, applauded the government for providing vocational training centres and information communication technology (ICT) centres.

“We are grateful for the move done by our government to create ICT centres as they have allowed youth to attain information,” she said.

“We implore the Ministry of Youth to continue implementing projects that address the needs of the youth for the growth of our nation.”
